At its core, the Praktica B100 Electronic is a 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, using the standard 24×36mm film format. It features the proprietary Praktica B bayonet mount, which incorporates electronic diaphragm control (EDC), allowing compatible lenses to communicate aperture settings electronically. This integration supports the camera’s key strength: aperture-priority automatic exposure, where the photographer selects the desired aperture and the camera automatically calculates a stepless shutter speed for correct exposure.
The shutter system is one of the B100 Electronic’s standout engineering features. It uses an electronically controlled vertical-travel metal focal plane shutter, offering smooth and precise operation. Shutter speeds are completely stepless in automatic mode, ranging from 1 second to 1/1000 second, with an additional Bulb (B) mode for long exposures. Even without a battery, the camera retains a mechanical fallback speed (around 1/60s depending on production variant), ensuring a level of usability in emergency situations.
Exposure accuracy is achieved through an open-aperture TTL metering system, using a Cadmium Sulphide (CdS) photo-resistor to measure light directly through the lens. This system covers a broad EV range from EV 1 to EV 19, allowing reliable performance in both low-light and bright outdoor conditions. The camera also supports ISO/ASA settings from 12 to 3200, providing flexibility for a wide variety of film stocks. Exposure compensation is available via a dedicated dial, offering adjustments of ±2 EV in half-stop increments, giving photographers creative control over challenging lighting scenarios.
Looking through the viewfinder, users are presented with a bright fixed pentaprism design offering approximately 95% frame coverage, ensuring accurate composition. The focusing screen includes a triple split-image wedge, microprism ring, and ground glass matte field, making manual focusing intuitive and precise. The viewfinder also provides critical shooting information, including a needle-style shutter speed indicator, aperture confirmation, and low-battery warning, helping photographers stay informed without removing their eye from the scene.
Additional features include a hot shoe with X-sync flash support and a PC sync socket, allowing compatibility with a wide range of external flash units. Flash synchronisation is supported at speeds between 1/60s and 1/90s, depending on configuration. A built-in mechanical self-timer with an approximate 8-second delay adds convenience for group shots or tripod-based compositions.
Film advance is handled manually via a smooth winding lever, which also includes support contacts for an optional motor winder attachment, expanding shooting speed capabilities for more dynamic work. The camera is powered by a 6V PX28 (4LR44) battery or four LR44 button cells, ensuring readily available power options. Compact and solid in hand, it measures 138 × 87 × 49 mm and weighs approximately 530 grams (body only), striking a balance between portability and durability.
